About This Wine

 

Kanta sources fruit from the Balhannah vineyard which is owned by Shaw & Smith. The soils are sandy loam over red clay and sits at around 420m above sea level. The first couple vintages, Egon actually missed harvest, not quite believing how quickly harvest can happen in Australia compared to the snail pace procession in Mosel.

What is now rather trendy with Riesling, people raised eyebrows with Egon’s winemaking technique. In response to higher UV levels in Australia, Riesling tends to have thicker skins and holds a lot of flavour there instead of the juice of the grape as in Germany. Now standard for Kanta, the fruit has extended skin contact and long (up to six months) fermentations on lees.

Egon Müller’s Rieslings from the Saar in Mosel consistently rate amongst the most celebrated in the world. These wines will set you back (but make you happy about it), and we are therefore continuously thankful that Egon agreed to collaborate down under. Michael Andrewartha (of East End Cellars) first partnered up with Egon in 2005 with the inaugural vintage of Kanta. This was after a 3 year wait to find the perfect vineyard.
The Riesling heads of Australia may have turned their heads when they announced that this vineyard was in the Adelaide Hills, a region more famous for Sparkling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. However when one of the most highly regarded Riesling producers in the world lands on a spot, you’ve got to get excited for the result.
