CRFT Whisson Lake Pinot Noir 2019

AT FIRST SIP-Dark cherry, raspberry, roast beetroot and a soft hibiscus note. Oak shows through with a smoky redcurrant note all with a 'barely there' impression. Medium bodied, concentrated red berries and 'earthiness' on the palate, vibrant acidity creates an overall slippery smooth wine. AFTER A FEW-Sitting in the dirt under a raspberry bush, grabbing handfuls of berries.

About This Wine

This Pinot Noir sources fruit from the Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills. The fruit was treated to a cold soak prior to wild fermentation kicking off in open top tanks. 25% of bunches were kept whole and the ferment was gently hand plunged. Once the fermentation was complete, the wine was then pressed to barrel for malolactic fermentation and maturation. Maturation was for 9 months in French oak, of which 25% was new barriques.

Candice Helbig and Frewin Ries both discovered a love for winemaking in their late teens in South Australia and NZ respectively. After starting CRFT in 2012 and getting married shortly after, they began purchasing vineyards that now make up this dynamic estate. Gruner Veltliner is a specialty from these two, as is Pinot Noir and Shiraz. They only produce a couple thousand bottles per variety, all with the ethos of love and respect for the land. Based in the Adelaide Hills at Mount Lofty, CRFT use fruit from their own organically certified vineyards in the Hills as well as a handful of growers across South Australia.
