About This Wine

Deviation Road is synonymous with exceptional sparkling wine. The couple behind these bubbles are Kate and Hamish Laurie. Both of them grew up in the wine industry, Kate in WA and Hamish in the Adelaide Hills. Kate certainly loves all things French and was able to pursue her dream of studying in Champagne. Meeting Hamish, a vigneron in the Adelaide Hills seemed like an excellent fit for a young winemaker besotted with bubbles and Deviation Road was born.
The Hills lend themselves very well to sparkling wine with altitude and maritime influence keeping the region (and grapes) crisp and cool. The Deviation Road winery, cellar door and home block is located in Carey Gully, with the balance of fruit coming from purposefully chosen Piccadilly and Mt Lofty vineyards. Kate puts a premium on top quality fruit and her dedication to this standard and her relationships with her growers ensure this level is met each year.

This wine has been so consistently above its peers, made up predominantly of Chardonnay for citrus drive and finesse. The blush colour and alluring cherry/spice nose comes from about 5% Pinot Noir.
Attention to detail and certainly an unyielding requirement for best practice, requires all sparkling wines to be tiraged on site (about 20m from Kate and Hamish's front door).
This means the ever important second fermentation (when the bubbles are born) is under the watchful eye of Kate herself. Their tirage stock is kept at a constant 14 degrees to ensure this second ferment is slow, long and consistent.
Dosage is made up of base wines that have been aged for 12 months and the disgorging is done on sight, often by Hamish and in small batches.
The result is a sparkling wine, made in the traditional Champagne method that has spent an impressive 15 months on lees. And all for their 'entry' level Non Vintage.
