Barbera hails from Piedmont in northwest Italy (also home to nebbiolo), where it's flocked to by locals for its easygoing tannins, fresh acidity and all-round delicious ‘everyday’ appeal. This example from Tumblong Hills nails the brief, and then some. Classic blueberry and fresh dark plum flavours, medium-bodied and very comforting. A fresh thread of acidity keeps the whole thing bright and lively.
About The Region
Gundagai may be the best kept wine secret in NSW. Located 160 kilometres southwest of Canberra, along the foothills of the picturesque Snowy Mountains, the region is rich in red volcanic soils and winemaking history dates as far back as 1877.
The Snowy Mountains not only provide a beautiful vista; they also encourage cool evening breezes throughout the growing season, helping to preserve delicate and complex fruit characters. Additionally, the vibrant ironstone-rich soil is particularly ideal for producing powerful, yet elegant, medium-bodied dry reds.
