South by South West Margaret River Chardonnay 2022

AT FIRST SIP-Flinty key lime pie, lemon pith, lemon myrtle and popcorn. A faint cashew like nuttiness permeates through. The acidity washes through the green apple and crisp pineapple on the palate. Excellent finish. AFTER A FEW- Elotes and a tommy's marg.

About This Wine

Perhaps the most northern vineyard in Margaret River, this wild ferment Chardonnay went straight into barrel on solids with no sulphur. With the level of acid in the fruit, Malolactic fermentation did not take place. There was minimal stirring of lees. This was a very small yielding vintage for Margaret River, which was amplified by the Gingin clone used for this Chardonnay (which tends to yield unevenly/less).

The wine remained in barrel (which were a mix of 1 year, 2 year and 3 year old barrels/puncheons) for 10 months.

The smallest wine region in Australia yet responsible for a huge proportion of the country's premium wines. World class Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are found throughout the region as well as some fantastic new curios.
Talented duo Mij and Liv have created South by South West, a ‘meandering negociant’ in Margaret River. They started SxSW in 2016 after vintages in Napa, Okanagan and importantly; Italy.

Though Liv is from Margaret River and has a love for it, the duo aren't held hostage by the prestigious sub-region. They chase excellent fruit all over Western Australia, keeping a keen eye out for Italian varieties in particular. The contracts they have with their growers stipulate that the pair take over managing the vineyard each vintage from the point of veraison onwards.

Their simple (yet effective) recipe of great fruit and minimal intervention produces exciting results full of charm and a certain Italian energy.
