Oates Ends 'The GWB' 2022

About This Wine

Oates Ends is homecoming and love of land. They are the wines of Cath Oates, whose highly awarded international winemaking career, spanning 20 years, has covered Italy, New Zealand and the USA. The name comes from a barrel of wine made in the shed two decades ago, a joint family effort that made use of the grapes left at the ends of the rows and was bottled to share with family and friends.

About This Wine

Oates Ends is homecoming and love of land. They are the wines of Cath Oates, whose highly awarded international winemaking career, spanning 20 years, has covered Italy, New Zealand and the USA. Farming is in the blood of the Oates family, with Cath and her brother Russ growing up on the various family farms in Margaret River as the third generation on the land. The Wilagri property was purchased for beef farming in 1990 and the vineyard was first planted in 1998, on classic Wilyabrup soils, complex loams over deep well draining gravels, renowned for producing world class wines. Now owned by Russ, after the original property was divided in two, he applies over 30 years of viticultural experience to grow impeccable quality fruit.

The newest addition to the lineup of Oates Ends is one that speaks to the heritage of the region, the quality of the single vineyard and the community that this brand is built upon. The story begins just prior to the kick-off of the 2021 vintage, Cath who is an avid beach-goer had a harrowing encounter with a shark that left her on crutches. Unable to carry out the strenuous labour of picking, to her amazement, winemakers from all around came to her aid. In honour of this Cath has decided to create a wine that will honour this story, the GWB is that wine.

A blend of predominantly Sauvignon Blanc with Semillon and Chardonnay blended in to provide additional aromatics and structural finesse. Offering power and refreshment in equal parts this is expertly blended to perfect harmony. In many ways it sits outside the norm of the usual SBS blends of the region offering more oak in support and profound aromatics.

The name 'Oates Ends' comes from a barrel of wine made in the shed two decades ago, a joint family effort that made use of the grapes left at the ends of the rows and was bottled to share with family and friends.
