About This Wine

This vineyard lies just inland from the coast. Its sandy, schisty soils are well weathered. These chardonnay vines (gingin clone) run east-west with a slightly sloping northern aspect.

Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and transferred directly to oak with full solids. Fermented by the native yeast in French oak barriques (approximately 30% new). Batonnage to encourage autolytic activity was based on flavour and partial MLF to balance the high natural acidity of this vintage. The wine was racked out f barrels with full lees to tank in December before bottling in February 2022.

The smallest wine region in Australia yet responsible for a huge proportion of the country's premium wines. World class Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are found throughout the region as well as some fantastic new curios.

McHenry Hohnen is a story of quality and attention to detail above all else. From their very first vintage in 2004, McHenry Hohnen have consistently curated a stunning suite of Chardonnay along with Cabernet dominant wines, incredible Zinfandel and more recently, Rhone varietals. They have continued to evolve their sustainability focus through continual investment in their family-owned biodynamic vineyards.

Founder, Murray McHenry planted his first vineyard at Burnside in Margaret River in 1984 and was a key supplier of fruit to Cape Mentelle in David Hohnen’s time at the helm right up until that first vintage in 2004. Murray now has sole stewardship of McHenry Hohnen and the wines are now made by the supremely talented Jacopo Danni Cali. ‘Japo’ as he’s known to his friends was born into wine in the hills of Soave and has travelled the new world extensively, making wine in New Zealand, The Barossa Valley and Margaret River before settling in the region to lead the winemaking at McHenry Hohnen.
