An incredible value grenache from arguably Australia's spiritual home for the variety, McLaren Vale.
Region: McLaren Vale, South Australia
Varieties: 100% grenache
Winemaker: Michael Sexton
Ripe raspberry, pomegranate and red cherry fruits aromas lead to a full-flavoured palate that remains light on its feet. Fruit intensity is complemented by suede-like tannins that frame the fruit beautifully.
This is an extremely special wine. If you've been keeping up with the explosion of McLaren Vale grenache you'll know the holy trinity that make the exceptional examples so good is comprised of 1. the sourcing of old vine material that are 2. planted on sandy soils, and 3. are dealt with a gentle hand in the winery.
Sourced from 70-year-old vines, mainly off the Brini vineyard, planted on deep sandy soils and produce concentrated, expressive fruit.
Michael's approach is very minimal, partial ferment in locally made terracotta pots with all ferments hand plunged before spending nine months in oak. There are benchmark examples – and there are those setting the benchmark. This, undoubtedly, is the latter.

Main & Cherry has turned heads in recent years with winemaker Michael Sexton's small batch, distinctive wines.
Having grown up in the Adelaide Hills where his parents planted the original Main & Cherry vineyard in 1996 and Mike acquiring his own home vineyard in McLaren Vale, he knows the vineyard wealth of this region very well.
Mike likes to keep things in harmony so instead of using pesticides in the vineyard, he employs a gang of Indian Runner ducks to keep pests in check. In the winery, he works gently by hand, favouring a small basket press over any high tech equipment.
